So Close!

September 10, 2016

And yet so far! I’m almost done with my latest custom.  I carved.  I sanded. I sanded some more. And more.

Finally the make-up. Shading, airbrushing, eyebrows. Will I do freckles?  I don’t know.

I still have eye-chips to do and some other odds and ends. This is the part where I get excited and impatient. Stay tuned…

Let’s resurrect this thing

September 7, 2016

Hello Dolly friends. I’ve let this blog go and thought it was time to get back into it. I miss the old days of Flickr and it seems everyone migrated over to Facebook. But I found Facebook to be too negative. Even with all the cute kitty pictures and fun posts. I’ve been busy, still customizing and haven’t really shared them much over here. So without further adieu here are some of my more recent Blythe customs:

These have all gone to their homes or are on their way so they’re not available for adoption. I am working on a new girl though and will make her available soon. Stay tuned! I’ll be sure to post her here as well as on Flickr, Instagram, Facebook etc.

See you soon!

I’m back.

February 17, 2013

I’ve been away from updating this blog in a while but not completely away from dolly world. We moved out of state further west and have pretty much settled in and planted roots. We had rented a house when we first moved and it was very small and I didn’t have a studio. Now I have my own studio. A place I can keep the kids out of so that’s a real treat.

I’ve had a handful of custom Blythes that I did. My most recent are still getting some finishing touches like pull charms. I’m fresh out of pull charms so these two new girls wait for something as simple as that but otherwise I’m really pleased with how they came out.

Untitled

This girl is quite a stretch for me.

Caught between two worlds...

As you can see she has something going on with the left side of her face. I don’t know what her story is. Not sure if she’s had a spell cast against her or if she’s stuck between two worlds. Who knows? But she’s pretty special. She has two sets of hand-painted chips. She’s a translucent factory RBL girl with gorgeous lavender hair. I’ll probably offer her for sale eventually but my fingers have been sticky lately and I just want to enjoy her for now till I’m ready to move on and let her go.

I also did a mohair custom. But I think I’ll be staying away from doing re-roots for a while. I took forever to finish this scalp. I’ve just done so many re-roots in my past that I’m burnt out. All those Momoko re-root commissions from many moons ago really turned me off. The good news is another customizer wants to trade with me where I do a face-up for her and she does a re-root for me! She enjoys them and finds them relaxing so in the future I’ll let someone else do an alpaca re-root for me!

Anyway, this girl is named Estella. She’s a starry eyed girl.. Literally! She has a set of Melly Kay resin chips which I just love on her!

Oh Noes...

I gave her a set of hand painted chips also.

Estella's hand painted chips

She will be made available soon! Still getting her pull charm together. I may put her on eBay. Haven’t decided yet but open to enquiries also.

Back in Business

Lids, originally uploaded by sylviecoladolls.

Well, I’m back from IFDC and all those pressing projects and commissions are finally out of the way,(except for Iveta’s…haven’t forgot about you my dear ;-)).

I feel like I can breathe again and decided I will accept commissions again on a very limited basis. I’ve decided I’ll accept two a month and already it looks like August and September are booked so I have 4 more openings for the rest of the year. This means that if you send a doll for me to do during your month it will be completed the same month. I was falling so far behind that that wasn’t always the case.

This will be for face-ups only. I may accept 1 or 2 re-root commissions here and there but it will be a longer wait from when the doll is received.

I’m taking the rest of July off and will work on projects here and there. Perhaps paint my family room and bathroom. Also I want to get back into other forms of creative expression. So maybe I’ll do some artwork. Wherever the wind takes me I suppose.

Now, I briefly mentioned my friend Iveta. She also goes by the title “dolly pimp.” Well, her photography is featured on a clothing line website. Congrats Iveta!

Wendy Dreary came for a fix-up

May 28, 2010

Wendy Dreary came for a fixup, originally uploaded by sylviecola(trying to catch up.).

This lovely sad girl I customized a few years ago was showing some wear and tear in her photos.  So, I asked her owner to send her back to me to fix up. She really loves her Wendy Dreary and was reluctant at first and said she couldn’t stand to be away from her.  But she finally sent her over.

It’s kind of nice to reunite with what was one of my first Blythe dolls. She was previously a Rainy Day Parade and was the one doll that perked my interest in Blythe. I think I wanted her most of all but went for some less expensive dolls.  I gave in eventually.  Now I know if there’s a doll I really want, I just need to plan on getting it instead of trying to satisfy my want with a cheaper doll.

Eventually, she turned into Wendy Dreary for a collector friend who was wanting me to do a goth girl for her. And Wendy has been very dreary. She got stuck at the post office without a notice to her mom. We wondered where Wendy disappeared to but her mom persisted and she had been sitting at her local post the whole time. So from the start she’s had a rough life in this incarnation.

Now she’s all freshened up and I will ship her back and hope there isn’t another strange ordeal of being lost in the wilderness.

In a Corner

Meet Lucy Limeade. Remember a week or two ago I mentioned the factory or proto-type Blythes that I was expecting? Well here she is. Actually,  it’s just her scalp put on a Simply Lilac bait Blythe I had lying around. I’m deciding what to do with the faceplate she came with. I believe it is Tarts and Tea’s. It looks to be natural and the only one that matched to the pictures.

When my factory girls came they had some flaws with the eye-mech where they weren’t turning properly. I have since fixed the little problems.

The other doll I got was a Ribbonetta Wish Scalp on Urban Cowgirl. The eye lids also are RW’s. I’m deciding what to do with her. I fixed her hair. She didn’t have the bangs cut and not much thatching was in place so I sorted that out. I had to give her bangs because her thatching stops midway because she was meant to have thick bangs.

For now I plan to keep my Amaryllis girl. Normally, I find it difficult to bond with my customs unless their make-up is very light. But with this hair, I just have to enjoy it for a while.

Fresh and Fruity

Happy Easter!, originally uploaded by sylviecola(trying to catch up.).

Here’s my new girl “Simply Mango.” I haven’t given her a name yet. She came with “Simply Guava” who has fluorescent pink hair. CWC will sometimes release dolls as a set which brings the price down per doll. I try to take advantage of these so I can have them around to customize.

But I really like this girl just as she is. I love the color of her hair. I’m not wild about Guava. I’m sure once Guava is customized though I’ll change my tune. But this Mango girl. I just LOVE her hair color! It’s the color of a mango lassi. Maybe I’ll call her Lassi. I’m sure everyone else that gets her will call her that too. I can be sure there will be at least one.

For now I will change out her chips. I enjoy the shiny newness of a freshly released Blythe. Then when I tire of her I’ll probably customize her and debate whether I should sell her nor not. Right now I can’t imagine doing that. I just really get happy when I look at her hair. PAM does the same thing. I don’t play with my PAM that often but I get a little pick me up when I look at her teal hair.

The Power of Green

April 6, 2010

Agua get’s a makeover, originally uploaded by sylviecola(trying to catch up.).

No, I’m not talking about money…well not directly. I’m talking green hair. Anytime I’ve customized a doll with green hair and then offer her up for sale or even before she’s been offered up, the doll gets snatched up pretty fast.

This pretty girl in the picture is my customized Simply Peppermint, Agua.  Alas, she’s mine no longer and is actually on her way to Australia.  ‘

I wasn’t initially planning on selling her but the previous doll I finished up, Frankie Freckle Face, became too irresistible to sell so I decided to keep her for now.  And after an impulse buy or two,  I had to put another girl in her place.  Agua volunteered. My house is too crazy for her I guess.

I will miss her.  However,  I’m waiting for a factory doll,(impulse buy,)  that has Amaryllis’ hair and I’ve been itching to add her to my collection. Plus since this doll is a factory/prototype doll, I don’t have to feel guilty about customizing her since Amaryllis is quite expensive.

Back to green hair. I guess it’s no coincidence that of all the fantasy colors CWC uses, different shades of green seems to be one of the most frequently used. Pink is actually used the most for fantasy colors and then I think green is next.

This is a new girl I sneaked in some time to work on.  She’s a custom Primadolly Winsome Willow. As her name suggests, her face is covered in freckles.  She doesn’t like to wear make-up but I managed to convince her that some blush and lip gloss would look nice. Of course, it had to be flavored lip gloss.

I gave her this girlie haircut, four new sets of eye-chips and she’s been gaze adjusted, boggled and sleep eyed. Her eyelashes match her hair color.

I’ll probably make her available soon. She’s kind of irresistible. Just deciding on what to dress her in. For some reason I’m thinking Brady Bunch but that’s because Winsome Willow reminds me of Marsha Marsha Marsha when her hair is uncut. She does have that 70’s look about her.

The neverending re-roots

March 29, 2010

After bang trim., originally uploaded by sylviecola(trying to catch up.).

Here is my latest commission I finished. She was a Piccadilly Encore and her owner wanted her to have new hair and new make-up. I gave her a high color palette. Hard to believe she was a PiccaE.

Well, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I have decided that I won’t be accepting any new commissions for a while. I continue to get further and further behind and put off my own personal projects or I feel guilty when I take time to work on personal projects.

Initially, I kept thinking once I finished with all the commissions, then I could work on my own creations. It seems that I always had some coming in which I’m grateful for. However, as an artist I always want to try new things and explore different possibilities so I have to accept my limitations and there are only so many hours in the day.

I will finish everyone on my list and once those are done I will be closed for any new commissions indefinitely. It makes me a little sad but it’s been long overdue.

I plan to practice more sewing and coming up with designs to dress my future ooak Blythes. Maybe I’ll get back into painting. Maybe I’ll try something completely new. Maybe I’ll be able to write more and keep up with this blog and getting better at photography. Whatever it is, it will be something creative and hopefully open new possibilities.
