Famous last words…

April 20, 2008

Previews

I have closed my commission book for a bit so I can get ready for IFDC at the end of July. I took a break in between commissions here and did this Volks Dollfie man head. Then I gave him a razor cut and I think my Momokos are going to fight over him. I’m planning on bringing him IFDC and have some other doll heads to work on so I can offer them up for sale.

So, as I said in my title “famous last words” because in my last post I said I wasn’t into the bigger ball-jointed dolls and then after finishing my face-up on Sooah, I felt like playing with her. I put a black wig on her and she turned completely asian and really cool looking so I going to style her up in more street clothes with a punk goth type theme and will also bring her to the convention. I may even try to make clothes but I’m still a beginner in sewing and have lots to learn. I guess working on Sooah and getting her face-up just right brought out her personality and I guess we “bonded” as they say in the doll world.

Stay tuned for more face-ups on the smaller Obitsu and Volk’s dolls. 🙂

Ball-jointed Mania

I’ve had 60 cm resin ball-jointed dolls sitting in work pile for some time. Sooah here was a birthday present from hubby- well more like a gift certificate which I picked out this girl thinking I may be interested in a doll this size. But she sai in a box not made-up and here she finally is finished. I think as far as the resin dolls are concerned I prefer the tinies so I’m adopting this one out. I enjoyed doing her face-up though and am trying to hone my skills in that area. I finally got the tricks and techniques and am very pleased with how she came out. I also redid my DIM Persia head…

SOLD
Again, sitting in the not played with pile so I will also adopt him/her out. I just prefer little dolls and when they get bigger than 11 inches tall, I lose interest. I don’t have the room for dolls this size with little hands wanting to grab and tug so it’s just not practical. They are lovely to look at in pictures so I’ll just enjoy them from that angle.

Working on these dolls was a nice change of pace from re-rooting. I have stuff waiting to be done and will tackle those this weekend. But I have to break it up so as not to get burnt out. Here’s my latest re-root. Just a simple one but less is more sometimes. I also changed her eye color, eyebrow color, added lashes and freckles.

Mom would be proud…

There’s lots to catch up on since it’s been a while since I’ve updated. In between then I completed four customs. One of which is this Rainy Day Parade above. The customer was looking for a melancholy goth girl and RDP is a great base for that with her jet black hair. I also made her dress from the “All Spruced Up” dress pattern at Puchi Collective. It was my first dress with sleeves and a collar. Being the novice sewer that I am I got stuck on the sleeves. I had no idea how to attach them and spent an entire evening trying to figure out how it was supposed to go together. After some trial and error I finally figured it out but went ahead and left the first dress as the practice dress and made another one for this doll. There were some happy accidents along the way and I think I’ll have to make more dresses so I can get the hang of the sleeves and collar. I think mom will be impressed but I won’t let her look at the stitching or anything like that 😉

Again, I obsessed over my Lati face-up and ended up redoing her eye-brows. Now she’s done. I will leaver her alone and focus on making her some more clothes. That and some clothes for 2 more Latis– Lumi and a Cat Coco. They probably won’t arrive till the end of April. Gah, the wait!

the eyebrows are done!

And finally I did a different doll for a re-root. One of the new Dynamite Girls- Aria. She’s been given and razor cut with my new razor cutting tool that was suggested to me by a hairdresser. I loved using it and it was so easy to get this nice look that’s modeled after an Ashlee Simpson hairdo the customer referenced me to.

Have a great weekend!

Week 2 of boycott and other projects

Custom for Laura

Today’s Blythe is a new custom I did for Plastic Fashions . She an extremely talented clothes designer that does both human size and Blythe size clothes. She was looking for a side part raven haired rbl girl so I turned her Saffy into one. As expected, a Raven haired doll is usually guaranteed to be quite stunning.

Well, it’s week 2 of the boycott against eBay. I’m pessimistic that they’ll change their ways because it’s obvious they want to push the smaller sellers out the door and align themselves with big companies like Sears and GM. You can read about all the dirty tactics they’ve been pulling here. They’re actually trying to make it hard for buyers to leave 5 star feedback ratings and testing out new page views that say in big red letters “This seller has low ratings for shipping time.” The seller doesn’t even know this is what their page looks like and this particular example showed that the Seller had 4 out of 5 stars for shipping time. 4 is said to be good when the buyer is selecting it and yet eBay is turning around saying it’s a low rating. Ridiculous isn’t it? Almost hard to believe but click here to see what I mean. And what’s worse is they’re advertising other sellers similar items to direct the buyer away from the auction. They’re advertising on that seller’s dime. So, as a sometime seller on eBay, I have to ask myself why on earth would I subject myself to that kind of treatment and actually pay for it? Well, I won’t. End of story. Their mission is accomplished. I’m not going to waste my money on them. And I’m not going to buy from them either. EBay will most likely completely change from being an auction site where you can find rare collectibles and hard to find items to just another online shopping mall where you see the same things you’d see in any shopping mall.

So what’s a doll collector to do? Check out the other auction sites. Sign up with a deputy service like Crescent so you can bid on Yahoo Japan. Check out doll forums like thisisblythe.com. A lot of people sell their dolls through there and the official This is Blythe shop has lots of great stuff and good deals on newly released Blythes right in the U.S. Check out the many handmade items on Etsy. I’ll start adding links to great sites for doll purchases and sundries. There’s online stores like Hobby Link Japan which has some great prices on Blythes and Momokos but they sell out fast so keep up to date with their pre-order sales.

To be honest, I haven’t been using eBay as much to buy dolls and accessories. I had a few small purchases here and there but I found better deals elsewhere and I think prices will only rise due to the changes.

The first week of the boycott showed a 13% drop in listings. Not too shabby. They attempted to get my business by offering me $5.00 off shipping on my next five purchases. I’ve never gotten a coupon from eBay so I did find that very telling. But I’m closing the book on eBay. Time will tell what effect this boycott will have and hopefully the doors will be flooded open with their competition so the consumers have more choices on where to shop and sell.

Another Year, Another Bonus Truck

January 31, 2008

She likes her hair too!

Just over a year ago, I experienced the excitement of the Bonus Truck. The mystery of what I would get was too irresistible. Last year I got what the consensus considered the least favorite-04NY. I liked her though but admit that when I opened the box and saw her I was a little disappointed because I was really hoping for the more rare red head the most. The black haired girl was next on my wish list. It was still a great deal with all the goodies and I still have my plain Jane Scandinavian I call Anika. Sometimes I refer to her as Anika Underrated.

This year I made out! I went through two sources to try and obtain a Bonus Truck. One was the lottery at RnD,(didn’t get picked.) The other was a wonderful dealer right in Japan that several of us Momoko addicts used to purchase the Bonus Trucks at Doll Show 21 where they were selling this year. He couldn’t promise anything but was successful and immediately sent my mystery box out. I got it yesterday and could hardly contain myself as I opened the box. I was immediately shocked and thrilled to see I got one of this year’s coveted girl, the natural redhead dead center. Right now her twin is up on Yahoo Japan at over $600.00. I’ve heard the caddy redhead is even more rare but I’m really happy to have this one. The color goes very well with her skin tone and it’s plenty different from the 05AW girls. So yesterday was definitely a Happy Doll Day!

In projects, I finished another punk rocker commission. This customer wanted the reverse of Mama Told Me with mostly pink hair and black streaks. Really clever idea from the customer and I definitely love the results.

So I just realized I think I’ve had this blog up for a year now. I can’t believe how time flies. I was reminded of this because of a comment on one of my very first 60cm face-ups. Admittingly not my best work but hey, it was my first one. So here’s my latest one. I had his picture up a few days ago but ended up redoing him and like him better now. Not so washed out looking and very sweet and innocent. I re-worked this wig too so that it would be more boyish. Gave it a haircut and turned it on it’s side. I may still get another wig for him as this one is kind of funky.

So today was quite a happy doll day. I finally got Princess a’ La mode after a few months of buying her. She was waiting on the release of Momoko Slow Smile Traditional. That release was delayed quite a bit so PAM now named Midori was waiting in Japan for a while. I guess you can say it was an early Christmas for me. Such colorful girls. Who knew I’d be drawn to fantasy hair color.

03AN

Yay for trades!

I just realized it’s been at least a week since my last post. Here’s 03AN Momoko. She was not on my list of wants but crept in as I saw more pictures of her and decided to make her my next Momoko. And just like that she came as a result of a trade. She looks really good in hats and can fit in them pretty well since she has little bulk in hair.

On the project front I’ve been taking some personal time working on my own stuff in between commissions. I do appreciate those awaiting their dolls spa treatment patience so I can recharge my batteries. Here’s a Blythe doll that’s been a work in progress for a while. She’s previously a Tailor Gibson and has had her hair dyed several times. The problem with Tailor’s hair is the greenish cast that is almost impossible to get rid of. I kind of like this ashy color so I think she’s done. I’ll probably post her for sale on my website. But here’s her picture in the meantime.
