The neverending re-roots

March 29, 2010

After bang trim., originally uploaded by sylviecola(trying to catch up.).

Here is my latest commission I finished. She was a Piccadilly Encore and her owner wanted her to have new hair and new make-up. I gave her a high color palette. Hard to believe she was a PiccaE.

Well, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I have decided that I won’t be accepting any new commissions for a while. I continue to get further and further behind and put off my own personal projects or I feel guilty when I take time to work on personal projects.

Initially, I kept thinking once I finished with all the commissions, then I could work on my own creations. It seems that I always had some coming in which I’m grateful for. However, as an artist I always want to try new things and explore different possibilities so I have to accept my limitations and there are only so many hours in the day.

I will finish everyone on my list and once those are done I will be closed for any new commissions indefinitely. It makes me a little sad but it’s been long overdue.

I plan to practice more sewing and coming up with designs to dress my future ooak Blythes. Maybe I’ll get back into painting. Maybe I’ll try something completely new. Maybe I’ll be able to write more and keep up with this blog and getting better at photography. Whatever it is, it will be something creative and hopefully open new possibilities.

Mini G

Another doll from a month or so ago. I did a mini me for a client. She was kind enough to have really cool hair with red streaks in it. Of course, she had that before the concept of her mini me but it sure did make this a fun project!

She was originally a Bow Wow Traditional and I added the red streaks and gave her a new part line to match the owner’s hair.

For an SBL I really do like this girl. I had a BWT but sold her. But that’s o.k. I would have never come up with this concept on my own.

Crunch Time

March 12, 2009

Maggie's girl

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted last but I’ve been working on stuff and the latest is a mohair custom I finished for a customer. I’m really pleased with her outcome. Mohair is tricky to work with and gets matted so easily so it takes me a while to detangle it after finishing the rooting. She has a Cool Cat scalp and eye chips and was previously a Prima Dolly Aubrena. I airbrushed her make-up in pinkish tones including some airbrushing on the lips. I must admit she’s pretty dreamy and I wanted to play with her more but her owner didn’t waste any time paying for her so off she went just as soon as she was finished.

I say crunch time because I’m expecting any day now so I had to get as much done as possible before the new living dolly make his entrance. This may keep me away for a while although I hope not and hope to get back to work after some recovery time. In fact, I’m expecting the new set of Prima dollies toward the end of the month so hopefully that will motivate me to get back to work. Or at least provide some much needed doll therapy.

I’ve also had many people ask if I’ll be putting up more episodes of The Chronicles of Judith and my answer is yes, I hope so! Probably slow but definitely plan to continue for as long as my sister writes for it and my husband is willing to do music for it.

But for now I prepare for the new one which will definitly keep me busy. Until then, sianara!

Mom would be proud…

There’s lots to catch up on since it’s been a while since I’ve updated. In between then I completed four customs. One of which is this Rainy Day Parade above. The customer was looking for a melancholy goth girl and RDP is a great base for that with her jet black hair. I also made her dress from the “All Spruced Up” dress pattern at Puchi Collective. It was my first dress with sleeves and a collar. Being the novice sewer that I am I got stuck on the sleeves. I had no idea how to attach them and spent an entire evening trying to figure out how it was supposed to go together. After some trial and error I finally figured it out but went ahead and left the first dress as the practice dress and made another one for this doll. There were some happy accidents along the way and I think I’ll have to make more dresses so I can get the hang of the sleeves and collar. I think mom will be impressed but I won’t let her look at the stitching or anything like that 😉

Again, I obsessed over my Lati face-up and ended up redoing her eye-brows. Now she’s done. I will leaver her alone and focus on making her some more clothes. That and some clothes for 2 more Latis– Lumi and a Cat Coco. They probably won’t arrive till the end of April. Gah, the wait!

the eyebrows are done!

And finally I did a different doll for a re-root. One of the new Dynamite Girls- Aria. She’s been given and razor cut with my new razor cutting tool that was suggested to me by a hairdresser. I loved using it and it was so easy to get this nice look that’s modeled after an Ashlee Simpson hairdo the customer referenced me to.

Have a great weekend!

Meegiko wants a sister

So I think I’m going to get her one. I’d like a Lati with less of a frown and am looking at Lumi. And I’m definitely selecting the make-up option so I can just enjoy her when she arrives. I went and touched up Meegiko’s make-up as I found myself obsessing about any perceived imperfections. Oh well. I’m happy with her now… for now…

I made Meegiko some dresses. The same A-line pattern from puchicollective only Lati sized. She’s wearing one of them and I’m getting the hang of the machine. Still going at a painfully slow pace but since these dresses are so small it doesn’t matter. It still gets done fast since there’s only at most a 3 inch line of fabric. I hope to tackle another kind of pattern like the empire dress.

I’m squeezing these little me projects in between re-roots. Here’s my latest, a re-rooted 04NY. The customer wanted an opposite version of Dramatic bride and 04NY is the perfect doll to do that. Imagine Dramatic bride without melanin and this is what you get. She’s a nice fresh cool version. Here she wearing R&D’s Midnight Sparkle dress.

Another Year, Another Bonus Truck

January 31, 2008

She likes her hair too!

Just over a year ago, I experienced the excitement of the Bonus Truck. The mystery of what I would get was too irresistible. Last year I got what the consensus considered the least favorite-04NY. I liked her though but admit that when I opened the box and saw her I was a little disappointed because I was really hoping for the more rare red head the most. The black haired girl was next on my wish list. It was still a great deal with all the goodies and I still have my plain Jane Scandinavian I call Anika. Sometimes I refer to her as Anika Underrated.

This year I made out! I went through two sources to try and obtain a Bonus Truck. One was the lottery at RnD,(didn’t get picked.) The other was a wonderful dealer right in Japan that several of us Momoko addicts used to purchase the Bonus Trucks at Doll Show 21 where they were selling this year. He couldn’t promise anything but was successful and immediately sent my mystery box out. I got it yesterday and could hardly contain myself as I opened the box. I was immediately shocked and thrilled to see I got one of this year’s coveted girl, the natural redhead dead center. Right now her twin is up on Yahoo Japan at over $600.00. I’ve heard the caddy redhead is even more rare but I’m really happy to have this one. The color goes very well with her skin tone and it’s plenty different from the 05AW girls. So yesterday was definitely a Happy Doll Day!

In projects, I finished another punk rocker commission. This customer wanted the reverse of Mama Told Me with mostly pink hair and black streaks. Really clever idea from the customer and I definitely love the results.

Another Kenner!

January 18, 2008

After her hair treatment

I’m still amazed at the opportunity that fell in my lap the past 2 weeks. A fellow doll collector and flickr buddy has developed a new love for Petwork’s Momokos. Previously a Blythe collector, he started his search of Petworks girls and came accross my collection in my flickr photostream. I had some of his dream girls-particulary Nadiff. He had posted on several boards a want to by notice on this girl. I thought about it but wasn’t quite ready to give her up since I just got her not too long ago. But then he contacted me. So I decided to look at his collection to see if there was any girl I was looking for. I saw he had some Kenner girls so I mentioned I’d be willing to work out a trade for one of his Kenners. I thought to myself that he probably wouldn’t go for it but it turned out he was thinking of letting go of his blonde sidepart! My heart lept and I was taken aback thinking it was too good to be true. I knew I’d have to let go of more than just Nadiff in the deal. I struggled to think who else could go and finally decided on 03AN who came with Nadiff. He was looking for her also so we worked out a deal. Of course, he got some extras and some cash but thankfully it was within my reach. I had wanted a blonde Kenner and put her on my wishlist thinking it would be a while before I could afford her. So to suddenly have her and not have it be too painful as far as money and trades is really the best part. He’s got his dream girls and I got mine and we are both just ecstatic over the deal.

It was hard to focus on my dolly projects during all this but I did get some done and here’s the latest commission. She’s a Whiter Shade of Blue Momoko re-rooted in toyokalon. The customer wanted the pin straight texture to achieve this Princess cut. I found toyokalon hard to work with but definitely will use it as an option for when I want that super straight look the the BT06 red and black girls have and my 03RD has.
